HSK 5 is the fifth level of the Chinese Proficiency Test (汉语水平考试). Under the new HSK 3.0 syllabus, effective July 2026, here is what it takes:

3,600
cumulative words (+1,600 new)

What HSK 5 Unlocks: Universities, Scholarships & Careers

An HSK 5 certificate is required by 16 of China's 39 Project 985 universities and is the standard for CSC scholarship eligibility in non-STEM fields.

Top Universities

16 of 39 Project 985 universities require HSK 5 — including Tsinghua.

CSC Scholarships

Non-STEM CSC scholarships typically require HSK 5 with 210+ points.

Career Doors

Translation, business, and teaching positions in China often require HSK 5+.

All Majors Open

Unlike HSK 4 (mostly STEM), HSK 5 opens every program including liberal arts.

HSK 4 vs HSK 5: The Biggest Jump in the HSK System

Going from HSK 4 to HSK 5 adds about 1,600 new words — the largest single-level increase in the system — and shifts the exam from sentence-building to original essay writing and formal-register Chinese.

Teacher's Note: This is where most students hit a wall. The syllabus wording itself changes: HSK 4 says "有一定复杂度" (moderate complexity) — HSK 5 says "较流畅地" (fairly fluently). One word, massive leap.

What Changed in the New HSK 5 (HSK 3.0 Syllabus, 2026)

The new HSK 5 syllabus (Nov 2025, effective July 2026) raises vocabulary from 2,500 to ~3,600 words, defines 28 tasks and 72 topics, and splits characters into recognition vs handwriting for the first time.

Vocabulary +44%

2,500 → ~3,600 words. The 1,600 new Level-5 words are the single biggest jump in the system.

Characters split in two NEW

431 recognition (read only) vs 150 handwriting. The old HSK never made this distinction.

28 communicative tasks NEW

Vague ability descriptions replaced by 28 concrete can-do tasks across listening, speaking, reading & writing.

72 explicit topics NEW

7 main / 29 sub / 72 specific topics — the exam's scope is fully public for the first time.

Structured grammar syllabus

Detailed inventory including fixed phrases & spoken patterns textbooks rarely teach (see grammar section).

Culture tasks BLIND SPOT

Idioms, festivals, history, traditional arts & ancient science — background knowledge, now officially tested.

HSK 4 vs HSK 5 vs HSK 6: Where Level 5 Fits

HSK 5 is the bridge from "I can communicate in Chinese" to "I can function independently in Chinese." HSK 4 tests fairly fluent exchange on familiar topics (比较流利); HSK 5 tests handling fairly complex real-life situations fairly fluently (较流畅 · 较复杂); HSK 6 demands full fluency in complex situations (流畅 · 复杂).

比较流利 — fairly fluent, familiar topics
较流畅 — fairly fluently, fairly complex situations
流畅 — fluently, complex situations
Teacher's Note: Notice what does not grow: topic labels (77 → 72 → 68), task counts (30 → 28 → 24), and handwriting load (exactly +150 per level). Higher levels are not "more topics" — they take the same real-world domains and test them with more complex situations, more abstract vocabulary, and longer written output. The ladder is verbatim in the syllabus: 一段话 (paragraph) → 短文 (short text) → 文章 (article).

What HSK 5 really tests: four upgrades

1. From interaction to problem-solving

Not "ordering food" but customs, insurance, utility bills, asking institutions for help — Task 1 territory. Adult life, in Chinese.

2. From stories to explanation

HSK 5 is the level where Chinese becomes explanatory: causes, backgrounds, comparisons, opinions — not just "what I did last weekend."

3. From paragraphs to short texts

The writing ladder: 一段话 → 短文 → 文章. HSK 5 is the structured-short-text stage — see the writing section.

4. From word lists to topic literacy

Culture, society and science explainers enter the syllabus. Reading widely on the named themes beats memorizing alone.

HSK 5 Characters: 431 to Read, Only 150 to Handwrite

The new HSK 5 includes 431 recognition characters (认读字) but only 150 handwriting characters (书写字) — meaning roughly 2 out of 3 new characters never need to be written by hand.

431
认读字 · Recognition
recognize when reading — no handwriting required
150
书写字 · Handwriting
must write by hand (subset of the 431)
Read only: 蝴蝶 智慧 公寓 犹豫 Must write:
Teacher's Note: Flashcard all 431 for recognition, but drill handwriting on the 150 only — hours saved. Caveat: on the paper-based test the writing section is handwritten, so don't skip them. Computer-based (IBT) takers type with pinyin input, lowering the burden further.

HSK 5 Writing: The Make-or-Break Section

The HSK 5 writing section requires composing original ~80-character essays in formal written Chinese — it is consistently the lowest-scoring section for our students. Pick your track below based on your test date.

Track 1 — Testing Before July 2026 current format

Format: Part 1 — build 8 sentences from given words. Part 2 — two items: an ~80-character keyword essay or picture description.

The two mistakes that cost the most points

1. Summarization (缩写)

Copying the original word-for-word = no credit. Extract the main idea and retell it in your own words with simpler structure.

2. Register (语体)

Writing "因为…所以…" when HSK 5 expects "由于…因而…"; "很多" where "大量" fits. Formal style is a skill — practice it.

Sample A — Keyword essay (with teacher analysis)

Prompt: write ~80 characters using 环境、保护、责任、习惯、影响

保护环境是每个人的责任。环境污染日益严重,对人们的健康产生了很大的影响。我们应当养成良好的习惯,如节约用水、减少使用一次性产品。只有每个人都承担起责任,环境才能得到改善。

Why it passes: formal register throughout(日益严重 not 越来越严重, 应当 not 应该)· all 5 keywords used naturally · clear arc: problem → impact → solution → conclusion.

Sample B — Summarization 缩写 (180 → 80 characters)

Original (~180 chars):

小王是一名大学生,他以前每天都坐出租车上学,花费很多钱。后来他的朋友建议他骑自行车,不但可以省钱,还能锻炼身体。一开始小王觉得骑车太累,不愿意尝试。但是试了一个星期以后,他发现骑车让他精神更好了,上课也更有精力了。从此以后,小王每天都骑车上学,还带动了很多同学一起骑车。

Passing summary (~80 chars):

大学生小王原来每天打车上学,花费较高。在朋友建议下,他开始骑自行车,发现不仅省钱,还增强了体力。此后他坚持骑车,并带动了同学们。

Technique: keep who → problem → change → result, cut details (the one-week trial, feeling tired). Formal upgrades: 较高, 此后. Never copy original sentences.

Track 2 — Testing From July 2026 HSK 3.0

Honest status: official sample papers are not yet released — anyone claiming exact question types is guessing. But the syllabus tells us what you'll write:

Short compositions, every topic

All 28 tasks end with "能写出短文…" — expect prompts across daily life, work, society and Chinese culture.

Emails are officially in scope

Task 7 explicitly requires writing an email to explain a problem or request info. Practice: greeting → purpose → request → closing.

Opinion writing upgraded

Many tasks require 表达自己的看法. Structure: view → one reason → one example → restate.

Even a poster

Task 10 mentions creating a campus activity poster — short functional text, not only essays.

What transfers from Track 1: summarization (缩写) and formal register (语体) are built into the new task descriptions. Practice them now — they pay off under either format. We'll update this section the moment official samples drop.

Bonus: 5 reusable writing structures (work under both formats)
1
Experience 经历分享Background → what happened → how you handled it → takeaway or feeling
2
Problem handling 问题处理Situation → the problem → steps you took → result or request (this is also the email template)
3
Opinion 观点表达Your view → one reason → one example → restate the view
4
Culture intro 文化介绍What it is → origin or story → how it is practiced today → why it matters
5
Product / event intro 介绍推荐What it is → key features → how to use or join → recommendation

Examiner reality: a clear structure with HSK 5 vocabulary scores higher than fancy words in a messy structure.

HSK 5 Chinese Culture Questions (Tasks 24–28)

The HSK 5 culture questions cover Chinese idioms, traditional festivals, history, traditional arts, and ancient science — they test background knowledge, not language skill, and are the most common blind spot for Western learners.

Idioms & sayings 俗语·成语

The meaning and the story behind common idioms; features of the Chinese language.

Festivals 端午·重阳

Dragon Boat & Double Ninth customs, foods, origins; regional cuisines; folk legends.

Traditional arts

Calligraphy, guóhuà painting, folk music, martial arts, crafts — plus famous thinkers' quotes.

History 唐·宋·长城

Major dynasties; cause → process → result of events; key historical figures.

Ancient science 中医·古代科学家

Traditional medicine, ancient agriculture, scientists' stories & legacy.

Culture words in the list

生肖 zodiac · 除夕 NYE · 压岁钱 red envelope · 年夜饭 · 丰富多彩 · 酸甜苦辣 · 各行各业

Teacher's Note: Treat this as a separate mini-subject. Two focused weeks of graded 成语故事, festival explainers, and museum-style popular-science texts close this gap faster than any other HSK 5 weakness — it's knowledge, not skill. Don't leave it for last.

HSK 5 Grammar: What the 2026 Syllabus Requires

HSK 5 grammar centers on two skills: formal register (由于…因而…, 从而, 似乎) for writing, and spoken fixed patterns (真有你的, X什么X) for listening. Expand each block:

Formal register upgrades 语体提升 — the #1 challenge
HSK 4 says…HSK 5 expects…Example

How to Prepare for the New HSK 5

The most effective way to prepare for HSK 5 is syllabus-based: study the official 1,600-word list, filter all listening and reading input through the 72 topics, write weekly, and treat the culture tasks as a separate subject.

1

Use syllabus-based input, not random input

HSK 3.0's gift: the exam's exact scope is public — 1,600 words, 72 topics, 28 tasks. Study them as four weekly clusters: (1) independent daily life → (2) study & work → (3) society, economy & tech → (4) culture & tradition. One cluster per week, then re-test on the checklist above and feed your weakest group.

What to read (matches the tested text types): service notices & terms · product intros · popular-science shorts · news briefs · museum-style explainers · idiom stories · short opinion pieces.

2

Master the formal register

因为→由于 · 所以→因而/从而 · 如果→假如 · 好像→似乎/仿佛 · 很多→大量 · 越来越→日益. Every time you write, ask: "Is this how a newspaper would say it?"

3

Write every week

One 80-character essay per week from 5 random HSK 5 words (point → evidence → analysis → conclusion). Practice 缩写: 200 chars → 80 chars. A high-leverage drill: rewrite topics you mastered at HSK 4 to HSK 5 depth — 购物 becomes 消费活动, 健康 becomes 心理健康, 工作 becomes 经营管理. Testing after July 2026? Add email format and opinion paragraphs (see Writing Track 2).

4

Don't leave the culture tasks for last

Tasks 24–28 are background knowledge, not language. Schedule two dedicated weeks for idiom stories, festivals, dynasties, and traditional arts — see the culture section.

5

Know where the points are

Our students' typical pattern: Reading > Listening > Writing. Target 70+ Reading, 60+ Listening, 50+ Writing for a safe pass at 180/300 — and push Writing to 60+ for comfort.

6

Real student timelines

Alexander (Germany): HSK 4 → 5 in 140 hours — heavy essay practice + daily news reading. Lily (US): 160 hours — breakthrough came from timed 缩写 drills. Typical range: 100–200 class hours.

Ready to cross the HSK 4→5 gap? Our HSK 5 course is built on the 2026 syllabus — 72 topics, in order.

HSK 5 Courses   Free Assessment

Should You Take HSK 5 or Go Straight to HSK 6?

For most learners the answer is HSK 5 first: almost every university requirement stops at HSK 5, while HSK 6 adds 1,800 more words (3,600 → 5,400) and full article-length writing.

Take HSK 5 first if…

· You passed HSK 4 but long articles are still slow
· You can't yet reliably write a 150–250 character short text
· Culture, society & science texts feel unfamiliar
· You need a certificate this application cycle
· Natural-speed dialogue or news still loses you

Prepare directly for HSK 6 if…

· You already read general news & explainers comfortably
· You write full articles, not just paragraphs
· You can argue a position on social or economic topics
· Your target program explicitly requires HSK 6 — rare, but it exists

Honest caveat: skipping to HSK 6 rarely pays off. 16 of 39 Project 985 universities ask for HSK 5; only a handful of programs (mostly Chinese-language or humanities degrees) require 6. And HSK 5 is the natural training base for 6: short texts before articles, 较流畅 before 流畅. Planning ahead? Read our complete HSK 6 guide.

Not sure where you stand? Run the HSK 5 Gap Finder first — it shows whether your real gap is vocabulary, reading speed, grammar patterns, or topic knowledge.

HSK 5 FAQ

How many words are in HSK 5?

About 3,600 cumulative words (HSK 1–5), of which ~1,600 are new at Level 5 — up from 2,500 under the old system.

How many characters do I need to handwrite for HSK 5?

Only 150. The syllabus splits characters into 431 recognition (认读字, reading only) and 150 handwriting (书写字). Drill handwriting on the 150; learn the rest for recognition.

What level is HSK 5 in CEFR?

Approximately B2+ to C1. No official CEFR mapping has been published for HSK 3.0 — this is our assessment based on the syllabus task descriptors: understanding demanding texts, fluent spontaneous expression, and academic/professional use of Chinese.

Is HSK 5 difficult?

It's the biggest jump in the HSK system — ~1,600 new words and a shift from sentence-building to original essay writing. The new 2026 version is broader (vocabulary +44%, new culture tasks) but more transparent: handwriting drops to 150 characters and the full scope (28 tasks, 72 topics) is public for the first time. More to learn, fewer surprises.

Should I take HSK 5 before or after July 2026?

If you're already near 180/300, grab one of the final June 2026 old-format seats: 1,100 fewer words and abundant past papers. Otherwise, prepare directly for the new syllabus. In between? Work backwards from your university application deadline — results are valid 2 years for admissions.

Should I take HSK 5 or go straight to HSK 6?

HSK 5 first, for most people. Nearly all university requirements stop at HSK 5; HSK 6 adds 1,800 words (3,600 → 5,400) plus full article-length writing. Go straight to 6 only if your program explicitly requires it or you already read general articles comfortably — see the comparison above.

How long does it take to pass HSK 5?

From HSK 4, typically 100–200 class hours, depending on intensity, native language and immersion. Our students Alexander (Germany) and Lily (US) took 140 and 160 hours.

How much does the HSK 5 test cost?

Mainland China: ~800–1,000 CNY; fees vary by country. Current policy requires simultaneous HSKK Advanced registration — budget for both. Check chinesetest.cn.

What's the biggest difference between HSK 4 and HSK 5?

The writing section. HSK 4 = arrange given words into sentences. HSK 5 = compose original 80-character essays and express views in formal written Chinese. A skill shift, not just harder vocabulary.

How should I prepare for the Chinese culture questions?

As a separate mini-subject.
