All You Need To Know About HSK 4 in 2026 (HSK 3.0 New Syllabus Guide)

HSK stands for 汉语水平考试 Hànyǔ Shuǐpíng Kǎoshì, which means “Chinese Proficiency Test”. The HSK test assesses non-native Chinese speakers’ abilities in using Chinese in their daily, academic, and professional lives. In November 2025, China’s Center for Language Education and Cooperation (CLEC) published the official HSK 3.0 syllabus (新版HSK考试大纲), effective from July 2026. This guide covers everything about the updated HSK 4 under the HSK 3.0 system, including the new 2,000-word vocabulary, 30 communicative tasks, 77 topics, grammar, scoring, and test tips. From our teaching experience, it takes approximately 100 class hours from HSK 3, or 220 class hours from zero, to reach HSK 4 level.

HSK 4 Achievement

Upon passing HSK 4, you can:

  • Converse in Chinese on a wide range of topics and communicate fluently with native Chinese speakers.
  • Discuss personal, social, educational, and professional topics with a moderate level of complexity.
  • Read general-purpose articles and write paragraphs expressing your experiences and opinions.
  • Handle daily affairs such as business processing, seeking help, and managing errands in Chinese.

HSK 3.0 Level 4 Communicative Tasks: The 30 Tasks You Need to Master (2026 New Syllabus)

The new HSK 3.0 Level 4 syllabus defines 30 communicative tasks that test takers should be able to perform. Each task describes what you need to do across four skill dimensions: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. These tasks represent a major shift from the old knowledge-based approach to a practical, real-world communication focus.

Teacher’s Note: We compared the new HSK 4 tasks with HSK 3, and the key difference is the phrase “有一定复杂度” (with a certain level of complexity), which appears in almost every HSK 4 task description but is absent from HSK 3. In practice, this means HSK 3 asks you to give simple information (简单介绍), while HSK 4 expects you to give detailed descriptions, share experiences, and express opinions in connected paragraphs — not just isolated sentences.

HSK Exam: Registration and Test Day Tips

HSK Test Registration

Register directly on the official HSK website: www.chinesetest.cn

The process: create an account, select HSK 4 + your preferred test format (paper or internet-based), choose your test center and date, fill in personal info, upload a photo if required, and pay the test fee.

Mandatory HSKK Registration: Under current policy, registering for HSK 4 requires you to simultaneously register for HSKK Intermediate (HSKK中级, the oral test). You cannot register for the written test alone. Make sure to budget for both fees.

Test Day Essentials for HSK 4

  • Arrive 30 minutes early. Bring your printed Admission Ticket (准考证) and original Photo ID (passport or national ID).
  • For paper-based tests: Bring at least two 2B pencils and a good eraser.
  • No electronics allowed — phones, smartwatches, and dictionaries must be stored before entering.
  • HSK 4-specific tip: In the Writing section, you must construct full sentences from given words (Part I) and write sentences based on pictures (Part II). Practice writing characters by hand before test day — many students who study digitally find handwriting the hardest part.
  • Time management: The Listening section plays each recording only once with no pauses. If you miss a question, mark your best guess and move on immediately.

How to Prepare for the New HSK 4 (Practical Tips)

Key mindset shift: The old HSK 4 tested whether you know Chinese. The new HSK 3.0 Level 4 tests whether you can use Chinese. Every task in the syllabus uses the phrase “有一定复杂度” (with a certain level of complexity) – this means you’re expected to go beyond simple Q&A and produce connected paragraphs, express opinions, and share personal experiences on each topic.

1. Expand your vocabulary strategically

The new HSK 4 requires ~2,000 cumulative words (up from 1,200). If you’ve already studied the old HSK 4 word list, focus on the approximately 800 additional words. The new syllabus adds vocabulary in areas that weren’t covered in the old HSK 4, especially around topics like technology, Chinese culture, social phenomena, and environmental protection. You can find the complete new word list in the PDF below and compare it with your current study list to identify gaps.

Download the complete new HSK 4 vocabulary list (PDF)

2. Practice paragraph-level output

The biggest challenge at HSK 4 is moving from sentence-level to paragraph-level production. For each of the 30 tasks, practice writing a short paragraph (3-5 sentences) and speaking for 1-2 minutes on the topic.

Example: Task 1 (谈论某个人物) – What a passing-level HSK 4 writing answer looks like:

我最佩服的人是我的奶奶。她今年七十多岁了,虽然年纪大了,但是每天都坚持锻炼身体。她年轻的时候是一位老师,教了三十多年的数学。尽管已经退休了,她还是喜欢看书学习新东西。奶奶的性格很开朗,总是鼓励我们遇到困难不要放弃。她对我的影响很大,让我明白了坚持的重要性。

Why this works: It uses multiple complex sentence patterns (虽然……但是, 尽管……还是), describes the person’s background, personality, and influence – exactly what Task 1 requires. Notice it’s a connected paragraph, not isolated sentences.

3. Avoid the most common mistakes

From our teaching experience: The two grammar areas where HSK 4 students lose the most points are:

  • 把字句 (ba-sentences): Students often misplace the object or forget the result complement. Remember: 把 + Object must be followed by a verb with a clear result (complement, 了, directional verb, etc.). Never write just “我把书看” — it needs to be “我把书看完了“.
  • 复句关联词搭配不当 (mismatched connectors in complex sentences): For example, mixing up 虽然……但是 with 因为……所以, or using 不但 without its partner 而且. Each pair is fixed — learn them as complete units.

4. Know where the points are

Based on our students’ score patterns, here is the typical HSK 4 score distribution from highest to lowest:

  1. Reading (阅读): Usually the highest-scoring section. If you have a solid vocabulary foundation, this is where you can build a score cushion.
  2. Listening (听力): The second-highest section for most students. Each recording plays only once, so focused listening practice is essential.
  3. Writing (书写): Consistently the lowest-scoring section. This is where most students lose the exam. Focus extra practice time here — especially on constructing sentences from given words and writing characters by hand.

Strategy: Since the passing score is 180/300 total (not per section), you can compensate for a weaker Writing score with strong Reading and Listening scores. But don’t neglect Writing entirely — aim for at least 50/100 in each section to be safe.

5. Focus on the high-frequency task clusters

Not all 30 tasks carry equal weight. Based on the syllabus emphasis, prioritize these clusters:

  • Daily life tasks (1-11): These cover the most common real-world scenarios and are likely to dominate the test.
  • Complex sentence patterns: The grammar section above shows 10+ types of complex sentences — these are the grammatical backbone of HSK 4.
  • Chinese culture tasks (26-30): These are new to HSK 4 and test cultural knowledge alongside language ability.

6. Real student timelines: How long does it take?

Lisa from the UK

Starting level: HSK 3
Class hours to pass HSK 4: 100 hours
Key takeaway: With a solid HSK 3 foundation, Lisa focused on expanding vocabulary and mastering complex sentence patterns. The jump from HSK 3 to 4 is manageable with focused preparation.

Tom from the US

Starting level: Zero (complete beginner)
Class hours to pass HSK 4: 220 hours
Key takeaway: Starting from scratch, Tom went through HSK 1-3 content before tackling HSK 4. The total journey took about 220 class hours — roughly 1-1.5 years of consistent study.

These are real students from MandarinZone. Individual timelines vary depending on your native language, study intensity, and immersion environment.

7. Prepare for the transition period

  • Before July 2026: Tests follow the old format. If you’re ready now, taking the test before July may be easier (1,200 words vs 2,000).
  • After July 2026: Tests follow the new HSK 3.0 syllabus. Allow extra preparation time for the expanded vocabulary and task requirements.

HSK 3.0 Level 4 FAQ: Common Questions About the 2026 Changes

Q: When does the new HSK 4 syllabus take effect?

The new syllabus was published in November 2025 and takes effect in July 2026.

Q: What is HSK 3.0?

HSK 3.0 is the commonly used name for the new HSK system that was first announced in 2021. It reorganizes the test into 9 levels (from the old 6 levels) and adopts a task-based, communicative approach. The official syllabus (新版HSK考试大纲) was published in November 2025 and takes effect in July 2026.

Q: How many words do I need for the new HSK 3.0 Level 4?

The new HSK 4 requires approximately 2,000 cumulative words (across HSK 1-4), with about 1,000 new words at the HSK 4 level specifically. This is up from the old requirement of 1,200 words. Download the complete HSK 4 vocabulary list (PDF).

Q: What is the biggest change in the new HSK 4?

The biggest change is the shift to a task-based, communicative approach with 30 defined tasks. The new syllabus emphasizes real-world communication skills across four dimensions: listening, speaking, reading, and writing.

Q: Does the test format change?

Yes. The first HSK 3.0-format test has recently been administered. The syllabus content (vocabulary, topics, tasks) has been significantly updated. Official sample questions for the new format have not yet been released at the time of writing. We will update this guide as soon as new sample papers become available. Check the official HSK website for the latest updates.

Q: Is the old HSK 4 certificate still valid?

Yes, HSK certificates have permanent validity as personal certification. For university admission purposes, HSK results (HSK 5 and 6) are valid for 2 years from the test date.

Q: How much does the HSK 4 test cost?

Test fees vary by country. Here are some reference prices for HSK 4:

Country/Region HSK 4 Fee
Mainland China 750 – 810 CNY
United Kingdom £40 – £50
Austria €60
Bulgaria 76 BGN
Singapore S$275

Important: Under recent policy changes, candidates registering for HSK Level 3 and above must simultaneously register for the corresponding HSKK oral test. For HSK 4, this means you must also register for HSKK Intermediate (中级). Plan your budget to include both fees. Always check the official registration website www.chinesetest.cn for the latest fees at your specific test center.

Q: How hard is the new HSK 4 compared to the old one?

The new HSK 4 is noticeably more demanding. The vocabulary increased by ~67% (1,200 to 2,000 words), and the task-based approach requires connected paragraphs rather than isolated sentences. The new syllabus also adds culture-heavy tasks (Chinese history, landmarks, customs) that the old HSK 4 didn’t cover. From our teaching experience, the Writing section is consistently the hardest part — students score highest on Reading, then Listening, and lowest on Writing. If you were borderline passing the old HSK 4, you will likely need additional preparation for the new version.

Q: Can I still take the old HSK 4 before July 2026?

Yes. Tests before July 2026 follow the old format with the old 1,200-word vocabulary. If you’re close to ready, taking the test before July 2026 could be a strategic advantage, as the old test has fewer vocabulary requirements and is a format you can practice with existing mock tests.

Q: How should I prepare differently for the new HSK 4?

Focus on practical communication skills. The HSK 3.0 syllabus expects you to handle topics like discussing people, handling daily affairs, sharing travel experiences, and talking about Chinese culture – all with “a certain level of complexity” (有一定复杂度). Practice writing paragraphs (not just sentences), expand your vocabulary from 1,200 to 2,000 words, and familiarize yourself with the 77 specific topics and 30 communicative tasks listed above. See our detailed preparation tips section.
