Weekly Highlights:
Our Teaching Approach: Interactive & Immersive
Effective language learning happens when students are genuinely engaged. Our methodology, refined over 17 years and validated by research in second language acquisition, creates an environment where students want to communicate in Chinese.
Communication-First Approach
From day one, students practice real conversations. We don’t wait until they “know enough”—they start speaking immediately in supportive, low-pressure situations.
Game-Based Learning
Our “Chinese Speaking Stars” program transforms language practice into engaging challenges. Students create content, compete in teams, and earn achievements.
Cultural Integration
Language and culture are inseparable. Students learn why Chinese people communicate in certain ways, making language patterns intuitive rather than arbitrary rules to memorize.
Progress Tracking & Adaptation
Teachers assess student progress daily through informal conversation and weekly through structured assessments, adjusting pace and focus accordingly.

Success Stories: Hear From Our Students
Emma Thompson, 15 | Melbourne, Australia
“I went from knowing zero Chinese to being able to order food, ask directions, and have basic conversations with my host family. The small class size meant my teacher could fix my pronunciation immediately. Living with a Chinese family was challenging at first, but by the end of two weeks, I was sad to leave!”
Achievement: Learned 180 characters, can navigate Beijing independently using Chinese
Michael Chen, 16 | San Francisco, USA
“As a Chinese-American who never learned the language, this program reconnected me with my heritage. The teachers were patient with my frustration, and the cultural activities helped me understand why my grandparents did certain things. I made friends from five different countries, and we still practice Chinese together online.”
Achievement: Progressed from zero to HSK 2 level, now taking Chinese classes at school
Sophie Laurent, 13 | Paris, France
“I was nervous about being the youngest in my group, but everyone was so supportive! The ‘Chinese Speaking Stars’ program made learning fun—we made videos about our Beijing adventures. My parents stayed in Beijing with me, and every evening I taught them what I learned that day.”
Achievement: Can read simple Chinese texts, writes daily journal entries in Chinese
James Wilson, 14 | London, UK
“I came back for a second summer because I learned so much the first time. My host family was the same both years, and it felt like coming home. This summer I could have real conversations about school, hobbies, and even some politics. The teachers remember what you struggled with and help you improve.”
Achievement: Intermediate level fluency, planning to study in China for university
Yuki Tanaka, 12 | Tokyo, Japan
“As a Japanese student, I already knew some Chinese characters, but pronunciation was very difficult. My teacher was so patient and used games to help me practice the tones. I loved the calligraphy workshop and making dumplings. The Great Wall hike was amazing!”
Achievement: Mastered Mandarin tones, can distinguish all four tone combinations

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child need any prior Chinese language experience?
No prior experience is necessary. We accept complete beginners through intermediate-level students. On the first day, we conduct a simple placement assessment to ensure students are in the appropriate level class. Our beginner curriculum assumes zero Chinese knowledge.
What’s the minimum and maximum age for enrollment?
Students must be between 7 and 17 years old. For the Half-Day and Day Camp programs, students as young as 7 are welcome. For Homestay and Hotel programs with overnight stays, we require students to be at least 12 years old for maturity and independence reasons.
How long should my child attend? Is one week enough?
While students can enroll for as little as one week, we strongly recommend at least 2 weeks for meaningful progress. Research and our data show:
- 1 week: Introduction and adjustment period; students gain confidence but limited retention
- 2 weeks: Optimal minimum duration; students achieve measurable skills and develop good habits
- 3-4 weeks: Significant proficiency gains; students reach the next CEFR sub-level (e.g., A1 to A1+)
Most of our students choose 2-3 week programs.
Is Beijing safe for my child? What about air quality?
Safety: Beijing is one of the safest major cities globally, with very low crime rates. We maintain strict supervision ratios (1:6 or better), provide 24/7 emergency support, and have comprehensive insurance. Read our detailed Safety Guide for specifics.
Air Quality: Summer (June-August) typically has the best air quality of the year in Beijing, with many clear, blue-sky days. We monitor AQI daily and adjust outdoor activities if needed. Most summer days have “Good” to “Moderate” air quality ratings.
What about dietary restrictions and allergies?
We accommodate all dietary needs, including vegetarian, vegan, halal, kosher, and food allergies. During registration, you’ll complete a detailed dietary form. For homestay programs, we match students with families who can accommodate their needs. For meal services, we work with restaurants that understand food allergies and can prepare safe meals.
How will I communicate with my child during the program?
All accommodations have Wi-Fi, and students can bring phones or laptops. We provide:
- Daily updates: Photos and brief summaries via WhatsApp group
- Weekly video calls: Scheduled check-ins with parents (we help coordinate time zones)
- 24/7 emergency line: Reach our staff coordinator anytime
- Direct contact: Students can call/message parents during free time
We also provide a China SIM card option (additional fee) for students who want local phone service.
What visa do we need, and do you provide support documents?
Most students will need a short-term study visa (X2 visa) or tourist visa, depending on program duration and nationality. Upon registration and deposit payment, we provide:
- Official invitation letter from Mandarin Zone
- Program enrollment certificate
- Detailed visa application guide for your country
- Support for any additional required documents
We recommend applying for your visa 6-8 weeks before your program start date. Contact us early if you have concerns about visa processing times.
What’s included in the program fee? Are there hidden costs?
No hidden fees. The program fee includes:
- All Chinese language instruction and materials
- Cultural activities, workshops, and entrance fees
- Meals as specified in your program type
- Local transportation during program hours
- Accommodation (for Homestay/Hotel programs)
- Completion certificate and progress report
NOT included:

- Parent Chinese classes: We can arrange adult Chinese lessons during your child’s program hours
- Family activities: Some weekend excursions allow parent participation
- Custom family programs: Contact us about our Family Camp option, where parents and children attend customized programs together
What happens if my child is homesick or wants to leave early?
Mild homesickness is normal and usually passes within 2-3 days as students make friends and get engaged in activities. Our staff is trained to provide emotional support. We maintain close communication with parents if any concerns arise.
If a student needs to leave early for any reason:
- We’ll work with you to arrange a safe departure
- Refunds are calculated based on our cancellation policy (see registration terms)
- We’ll provide all necessary support for travel arrangements
In 17 years, fewer than 1% of students have left programs early, and most who considered it decided to stay after staff support.
